Apparently, the sun is to blame for old ladies having blue washes through their hair.
Exposure to ultra-violet radiation causes the lens of the eye to yellow. The change occurs very gradually, it is impercepable and goes unnoticed. This obviously causes everything to seem to have a yellow tint, so when these ladies pick out a colour for their hair, they think they are getting a nice distinguished gray, but it's actually blue.
The world is a strange place.
