Geek
I really do not know why more people aren't using Jabber for IMing. If you don't know, Jabber is an instant messenger service like Yahoo! Messenger, MSN Messenger, ICQ and so on. However unlike those services, Jabber is free software, both free as in free beer and free as in freedom. So not only does it not bombard you with annoying ads, but it won't violate you privacy, force you to accept draconian end-user licences, eat your babies, or suddenly dissappear or start charging for the service because the company that owns the service goes under or gets tired of giving stuff away for free. Jabber is of the people and for the people!
Anyway, enough ranting. If you IM a lot, check out Jabber. There are Jabber clients available for Linux, MacOS and Windows. If you run Linux or Windows, and have existing IM accounts, check out GAIM. It supports Jabber and most of the proprietary IM services, too.
Go on, use Jabber, all the cool kids are!
