what you can't say
Life
An excellent article about heresy-spotting by well-known geek thinker, Paul Graham. Examining both historical and contemporary unthinkable ideas, he looks at ways of determining what we can't say today, why we can't say it and what we can do about it.
He rightly chastises the United States' government for quashing criticism of their fucked-up foreign policy by using labels such as unamerican, divisive or inappropriate and then goes on to argue reasonably well that strong groups don't need to resort to spreading new taboos. If he is right, then perhaps the american idea of freedom (as in free to invade any country you want?) is in more trouble than people seem to think.
Or is that too unthinkable?
