why i can't use epiphany
Geek
Yet? I'd really like to be able to use Epiphany as my web browser, it has a lot to recommend it, but there are some problems holding me back.
The blockers are:
- It uses Gnome default key bindings, which is fine, except I configure Gnome to use EMACS-style bindings, which Epiphany subsequently ignores. I know what the problem is, but that does not stop it from being really annoying.
- No undo for text fields.
- Creating a new tab or window doesn't focus the location bar.
- No context menu to google for selected text.
- Ordering of bookmarks is horked. You should be able to use drag and drop to reorder them in the manager and have that reflected in both the menu and the toolbar.
- No form filling?
Annoying things are:
- Tabs are never big enough, even when there's only a few and having a close button on each is a terrible waste of space.
- Bookmarks don't have spacers, you can't drag the site icon to the bookmark toolbar or manager to create a new bookmark.
The browser does rock, the Gnome integration, especially the way it handles session management across logins, the prefs menu item is in the right place: on the Edit menu, not under freaking Tools. It is fast, snappy and works well on my desktop.
I think I'll look at the current development version to see if any of the above issues are addressed and talk to the Epiphany crew about the ones that aren't. Let's see what we can do...
Update: More things to like: new tab insertion is weird at first, but once you grok how it actually works, it rocks! More things to dislike: No tab grouping of any sort in bookmarks.
Update2: I also can't live without a context menu item for viewing the current selection's source HTML.
