why i can't use evolution
Geek
Yet? Continuing with the tradition, I'd really like to use Evolution 1.5 as my email client, for a number of reasons:
- Integration with my desktop (data sharing, look and feel, etc.)
- MultiSync has an Evolution plugin for synchronising with my phone
- I'm sick of Thunderbird's memory usage
- Supports contact photos! Yay! :D
But there are few reasons why it's really annoying to use (sorted roughly in order):
- Server-side mail does not seem to be implemented (also my biggest gripe with MacOS X's Mail application)
- MultiSync only supports Evolution 1.4, so no syncing for me
- Virtual and resident memory sizes are actually about the same as Thunderbird's, approximately 170Mb and 55M, respectively
- I can't keep my Junk and Trash folders on my mail server, they must be local
- Message list view customisation is pure crack, over-the-top and broken
- Toolbars are not customisable
- Doesn't display a contact photos when viewing a message from them and doesn't automatically scale the photo when viewing the contact in the addressbook :(
I am looking at a development version of Evolution, so some of this may get fixed, but I don't expect the server-side searching to be implemented or to get MultiSync support for a while.
Still, I'll stick with it for a bit, maybe there's some killer feature I haven't yet discovered.

Err, whoops. That should read:
* Server-side searching does not ...
Dammit, I need to be able to search on the IMAP server. Is Moz/Thunderbird the only mail client that can do this?

Rusty, Outlook is _never_ the solution. It might be the question, but the answer is "No".
The problem with Multisync is that Evo 1.5 is really pre-2.0, which isn't going to be backwards-compatible. Hopefully the Multisync guys will write a Evolution-Data-Server plugin so that it syncs with not only Evo, but the entire Gnome desktop.
Still, I've stuck with Evo. I may still switch back to Thunderbird, but only if it also integrates with EDS for contact information at least.
