introducing planet volition
Web
Something I've wanted to do for ages is set up a Planet of the blogs I read on a regular basis. Most normal people use an RSS aggregator to do this - an application that runs on your computer and tells you when a blog or other website has been updated.
The first problem I have with desktop aggregators is they don't run all the time - only when the computer is on an you have the aggregator running. If I forget to run the application for a while, who knows what thrilling news I may miss.
The second problem I have is that an aggregator application is confined to the desktop machine it runs on. I would need to have an aggregator running on the three different machines I use regularly, which incidently sums to three different operating systems, so I would need to use three different aggregator programs. This is exactly the annoying problem I have with Jabber. Having multiple aggregators leads to duplication of updates and because they run as desktop applications, I can't access them if I'm away from those machines.
The clear solution is to run an aggregator on a webserver, doing so overcomes all the problems above. This is exactly what Planet is and this is exactly what I have done.
Ladies and gentlemen, I proudly give you: Planet Volition. Stay up-to-date with the cool kids, read what I'm reading, get inundated with blogging goodness.
Planet Volition is updated every six hours at 1:00, 7:00, 13:00 and 19:00 ACST. Some of the subscriptions are broken at the moment and there's many more to be added, but I'll get around to this in due course.
PS: Exams are over, I'll reenable comments on Volition in the next few days.

Well, *I'm* not showing up.
Damn you!
PS - club-lock type security is all you'll ever need against people lazy enough to emply MT spam engines. Nice one, goes in my Abrash-esque "appropriate technology" awards ;)
