on the correct usage of I

Well, it seems like the I element may have some use after all. This would certainly explain why it isn't deprecated in (X)HTML strict, along with B, TT, BIG, SMALL.

Now, I can see the point for I, but not nescessrily for the others. Part of the justification in the comment above comes from the Chicago Manual of Style, a style-guide for the written word. I'd be interested to see an Australian equivalent and check out what it has to say about these other typographic conventions.
