the other kind of noise
Life
Since all the cool kids are doing it and because I have been known to indulge...
Total Volume Of Music On My Computer
Sadly, only 372 songs in 584Mb. I used to have about 2/3 of my music collection encoded, a few tens of gigs, but I lost it when I left that job. Bummer.
The Last CD I Bought
My last music purchase consisted of The Grates' The Ouch. The Touch, ADULT.'s D.U.M.E. and The Decemberists' Castaways and Cutouts. The Grates are an excellent three-piece out of Queensland, kind of like The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but local. ADULT. is what Kraftwerk would have sounded like if they were a married couple from Detroit in the late 90's, sans industrial effects. I picked up The Decemberists mostly to boost my indie cred.
Song Playing Right Now
Gardenhead / Leave Me Alone from Neutral Milk Hotel's On Avery Island. I completely blame Mattness for this.
5 songs I listen to a lot, or that mean a lot to me
That is kind of tough - I tend to listen to whole albums rather than individual songs - even when listening to them on a computer. Anyway, in no particular order, with many omissions:
- Orange Crush, Green, R.E.M. A rocking song, something of a mantra. Named my now-defunct BBS after it.
- Fitter Happier, Ok Computer, Radiohead. Wanky and poignant all in one, with a pretty succinct finish:
fitter, healthier and more productive
That holds a lot of meaning for me, in a number of ways.
a pig
in a cage
on antibiotics - Heroin, The Velvet Underground and Nico (self titled). Because I *heart* junkies.
- Brave Men Run (In My Family), Bad Moon Rising, Sonic Youth. Actually, I could listen to pretty much anything by Sonic Youth a lot and have it all mean a lot. Maybe I am just living in one big teenage angst flashback.
- Any track on No Sleep Et Al, by Ianto Ware
3 people to whom I’m passing the baton
Hmm, the easy part: Matrine (who will answer everything with "Leonard Coen"), Pipstar (who has way more indie cred then I could ever have) and Paul (who will, one day, post off-topic).
Comments
I'm not sure what the convention is, but I'm posting here, because I'm way too green to be posting off-topic yet.
Total Volume Of Music On My Computer: 7.6G, 1907 songs. That's every album I have ever bought, except The Wonder Stuff's 'Never Loved Elvis' which someone stole from me at a party at my house once, and a handful that have gone missing between houses over the years, including Adorable's 'Against Perfection' which I quite miss, and Pulp's 'Different Class'. I could no doubt easily replace all of them, but I kind of enjoy missing them instead.
The Last CD I Bought: The Killers 'Hot Fuss'. I'm a sucker for a poppy single.
Song Playing Right Now: Actually, nothing. The last song my iPod played, though, was Regurgitator 'Miffy's Simplicity'.
5 songs I listen to a lot, or that mean a lot to me: I'll just keep on cheating, and use my iPod to tell me the top 5 played. (Note that (a) I've only had the iPod for 5 months, so this is a pretty local (in time) sample, and (b) I may lie if they turn out to be embarrassing.) Bright Eyes 'Lua' (had never heard of them, downloaded it as a sampler from Amazon.com of all places, and then thrashed it to death), Billy Bragg 'Lovers Town Revisited' (so many memories), Screeching Weasel 'I Think We're Alone Now' (a cover, obviously---hilarious), The Undecided 'Flowers' (an Adelaide band from the 90s---remember them? I presume they no longer exist. I was so amazed at finding their EP when I was ripping that I thrashed it to death), They Might Be Giants 'Ana Ng' (can't think of a good explanation).
3 people to whom I’m passing the baton: Matt (because this kind of thing probably shits him off and he almost certainly won't participate), Dale (because he'd probably enjoy it) and Phil (because this kind of thing probably shits him off and he almost certainly won't participate).
