who's your daddy?
Life
Hurricane Katrina hits the United States, killing more than 1,200: the Australian Federal Government donates $A10,000,000.
The Kashmir earthquake hits Asia, killing more than 20,000 people: the Australian Federal Government donates first $A500,000, then $A5,500,000.
Ugh.

In other news, we donated billions of dollars for the Tsunami relef.

It seems to be around the level of aid for the Bam earthquake when the Federal Government donated $4.5m

The estimates/wild-guesses of the number of dead from Katrina were a lot higher than 1,200 for a while.
I don't think you want to create a scale of dollars versus deaths for disasters.

A bit less than "billions": $US820 million, but yes, a large amount. This was good. Why so comparitively little for Kashmir then?

Yeah, that is fscked. thanks for highlighting this.

No, I don't want to create a scale. I would just like to see some fairness for once in the Federal Government's policies and actions.
Posted by: Mike on October 10, 2005 05:05 PM
Well, it was billions in Australia dollars, which is the currency referred to in your post. :)
Posted by: Dave H on October 10, 2005 05:32 PM
Michael - you haven't taken exchange rates into consideration. One Australian Dollar doesn't even buy a hot dog on the streets of Manhattan, but in Pakistan you can get better than 45 units of the local currency with it! ;)

Nah, we gave money to Asia already.

Ok ok, the next time Pakistan or Iran becomes a close geographical neighbour or becomes a close ally , saving our arses from certain Japanese invasion, then we'll go ahead and elevate them to the list of countries we give extra money to.
Sounds good!

Dave, I don't think you want to create a scale of the value of human life versus geographical locality (or historical accident) for disasters.
(With apologies, to, err, you)

Hey, it's all about fairness.
